Non-Negotiables

To get you to your goals in life, what elements will you add, and not let anything or anyone take you off course. That can be a big challenge, especially if your goal isn’t strong or well anchored.

So let’s start there. What is your goal? Your purpose? What legacy do you intend to leave? Write it down. Say it out loud. Now that you’re clear on that, what’s it going to take to get there? What habits and actions do you want or need to add to support your path? What do you want and need to drop to support your path? Don’t forget to acknowledge the important aspects of who you are and what you already do toward your goal.

Some of those lifestyle and habit changes are going to be a bit soft and squishy. Some are going to be hard and fast. And of the hard and fast lifestyle components, some are going to be non-negotiable.

Let me share one of my goals and the lifestyle decisions I feel are important to get me there as an example of what I’m talking about. One goal is to live to be 150 with vibrancy.

I want to add more variety of physical activity so I can become and stay lean and strong. I’m going to expand my cold shower regime to boost my immune system. Making sure I eat enough vegetables for ample fiber and walk outside daily regardless of the weather are important to my goal, too.

Deleting grains and sugar are vital to my plan. Weeding out negative thoughts and attitudes is important. I sense irregular bedtimes are generally deleterious to my goal so becoming regular to bed and rise will help.

And there are also the lifestyle elements that are a big part of who I am and feel will continue to support my goal. Things like laughing and being silly regularly, being curious about life, and being open to awe and wonder.

My non-negotiables in all of this are no sugar and grain, laughter and silliness, curiosity, regular and frequent movement, and eating my vegetables.

Now it’s your turn. What will you add, delete, and continue to do in support of reaching your goal? What are your non-negotiables?
